On March 30, 2012 Serbia Post released a new set of 3  stamps today  dedicated to Music and Fine arts  and 150 Years of Gymnasium in Pozarevac. . The first stamp is dedicated to 75 Years of the Academy of Music in Belgrade; the second stamp commemorates 75 Years of the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade and the third one - 150 Years of the Gymnasium in Pozarevac.

Belgrade Music Academy, the nowadays Faculty of Music Art was founded 75 years ago, by the decree of the Ministry of Education of the prewar Yugoslavia. The guiding thought of the first professors and Faculty's founders was to form artists and pedagogues who will, through their concert and teaching activities, create a specific artistic consciousness and by it transform and ennoble the wider social community. This artistic process of development is being continued even today with great enthusiasm by new generations of students and professors.

The Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade was founded in 1937, and in 1973 was renamed the Faculty of Fine Arts. In seventy five years of its existence, 2.887 students graduated from the Faculty and 1.146 completed post-graduate studies. Since its founding until today, 138 prominent artists from Serbia and wider Balkan region have been teaching at the Faculty.

Pozarevac Grammar School was founded by a decree of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic on September 24th 1862 as Pozarevac Middle School. In the following years it has changed names several times. Since May 22nd 2001 it has been known as Pozarevac Grammar School.

If I never saw another quad stack again in my life, that would be fine. Ideal. It's been done many times, and the whole set-up usually doesn't allow for very interesting fill—though this stack is not bad, by any means. In fact, this is as much as I've enjoyed a Krozel puzzle in a Long time (amazing what you can do when you're not stunting or going for a super low word-count). I think the puzzle might actually be Easy—I was somewhat faster than my average, but I see now that this puzzle is super-sized (15x16), so that makes my fast time even faster (relatively speaking). Took many of the small crosses to bring down a lot of those 15s, but in the end there were only a couple points of any significant struggle:

  • Couldn't figure out 30D: Formed another congress. Had RESAT, and then REWED (stupid ETHS can be spelled EDHS, as well, hence the D/T confusion) (40A: Old English letters). Got to REMET only after I somehow figured out IMITATION BUTTER (38A: Promise, e.g.). To do that, I had to change SEWN ON to SEWN IN (22D: Like many monograms on clothing).
  • My John Paul II was a POPE before he was a POLE. I can't be the only one who made that mistake. I also wrote in EPIC instead of EPOS at first (53D: "Beowulf" or "Gilgamesh").

Every other part of the grid, I moved through steadily. Stuff like DOMES and ISTH. and ARRESTEE took some pondering, but not too much. My favorite part of the grid, by far, is TRIPLE WORD SCORE (29A: Great red spot?). Great answer, even greater clue—and I despise Scrabble.

Bullets:
  • 17A: Dubious claim after crying wolf ("I MEAN IT THIS TIME") — took a lot of work, esp. since I came at it backwards.
  • 56A: 1991 Jackie Chan film ("OPERATION CONDOR") — Wow. Talk about your wayback machine. This is several years before Chan became a star in America.
  • 61A: Megillah book (ESTHER) — "Megillah" is a new word for me. I'm guessing it's not meant to be followed by the word "Gerillah."

  • 6D: First name in 1970s tyranny (IDI) — first thing in the grid.
  • 31D: N.B.A. great Thomas (ISIAH) — another significant gimme.
  • 32D: Pirates' hangout (PITTSBURGH) — "Hangout"'s a bit of a stretch, but PITTSBURGH's a good-looking answer.
  • 46D: Starbucks has one (AROMA) — virtually everywhere has one. :(
  • 57D: "Tell Me More" broadcaster (NPR) — they really like shows with "Tell Me" in the title, apparently.
  • 58D: Runner with a hood (CAR) — another semi-strained clue, but very gettable, nonetheless.

P.S. Here's a birthday / tribute puzzle for you. Warning: it revolves around the lyrics to a song. If you don't know the song, the puzzle will be doable, but at least partially mystifying. The song was very popular, so I'm hoping it resonates with at least some of you. You can get the .pdf or .puz file here (at Amy's place). And here's the SOLUTION. And (spoiler alert) here's the song it's based on.

Dear Esther [Eng] 2012

You don’t kill, shoot or level up in Dear Esther. You don’t even control your flashlight, it just clicks on automatically when you enter a dark space. Instead, Dear Esther is strictly about exploration, about piecing together a randomized story and trying to make sense of something that, by design, isn’t really supposed to make sense. According to thechineseroom’s creative director Dan Pinchbeck, the roughly two-hour long game was designed to elicit emotion. And yet despite the absence of traditional video game goals, the ways of achieving this emotion were very much based on established principles of game design.
In Dear Esther you start on a desolate piece of land. It’s very clear something went wrong, but exactly what is never made clear. Your movement speed is slow, forcing you to stare at the beautiful landscapes and soak in the soundtrack as you travel between points of interest. Every once in a while you’ll cross an invisible trigger and prompt a narrator to tell a small piece of the story. The game pulls from a batch of four possible story pieces, so as you play again, chances are you’ll hear different segments of story presented in a different order.
“We don’t look at a Jackson Pollock and it’s critical for us to work out in which order the paint hit he canvas,” said Pinchbeck. “That holds up in games. We’re not looking for the sense in Angry Birds or in Tetris. It’s just an experience we can engage in.”
Because of Dear Esther’s story randomization and the way all the pieces lock together, the mystery of the story drives the experience. “As far as we’re concerned, story is gameplay,” said Pinchbeck. “Story is simply a tool which enables us to create an experience, in the same way that physics enables us to create an experience in the same way that AI does. It’s irrelevant whether or not the story makes sense, what’s actually important is whether the player is following the emotional path at that point.”
Pinchbeck described that realization as liberating. In order to strengthen the emotional connections between the story and the environment, objects like bird nests were built into the game to link to the overall theme. “What we’re doing with these things, even though they’re not necessarily making any sense, is we’re lining up a bunch of emotional assets for players, which we can then use as a way of manipulating their experience. They key here is we’re never saying to the player ‘you have to understand this.’” Instead, according to Pinchbeck, it’s important that players simply feel the emotional impact.
That kind of approach was risky, admitted Pinchbeck, because if presented the wrong way it could be extremely irritating to players. And if you played Dear Esther, maybe you were extremely irritated by its pacing and deliberate opacity. To counteract the tendency for players to reject something that didn’t make any sense, Pinchbeck knew the environments had to be pretty enough to keep people moving forward and curious about what might be around the next corner.
“It’s got to be absolutely drop-dead gorgeous,” said Pinchbeck, explaining that it was important that the player understood that a huge amount of time and effort went into the visuals to establish trust. “[Players] are more likely to trust us when we say you might not recognize what’s going on in the gameplay initially, but if we invested this much in how it looks and how it sounds, trust us that we’ve invested just as much in making sure you have a good experience.”
As the game progresses, “there’s a shift away from the idea of going for realism toward impressionism. We gradually break down reality a little bit to allow us to do that. The player is kind of found in the mind of the narrator, and so you have to identify with him because you’re physically placed within the emotional state.” Pinchbeck singled out the mid-game cave section, in particular, as a good example of how the environments mirror the emotional state of the narrator. “It turned out to be an incredibly powerful tool. Far, far, far more powerful than telling [the player] how to feel.”

Dear Esther Trailer

In addition to randomizing story, placement of specific objects in-game were moved around, which Pinchbeck said fueled the post-game experience as players clicked into message board to try and piece together some kind of cohesive meaning. Apparently some players have spent 12 to 15 hours replaying Dear Esther to extract as much as possible out of the game.
“The designer says you play the game my way, you have a good time. But you’ve got to play it my way. That’s not meant to fool you or strong arm you, it’s just a contract. And again it comes down to the depth of the fidelity of the environment and the attention to detail is our way of establishing that contract with the player. The design principle behind that is absolutely no different from any other traditional game design.”
Though it may be difficult to notice upon first playing, Pinchbeck and his team also used traditional progression mechanics throughout Dear Esther with the way the game’s symbols were presented. “As we started moving further and further away from reality, the story’s making less and less sense, you’re seeing weirder and weirder stuff, it’s making stranger and stranger noises, we ramp up that curve. We almost increase our creative freedom to mess with these symbols in a completely identical way to the way you ramp up the difficulty curve in a shooter.”
With Dear Esther, Pinchbeck and thechineseroom wanted to explore what happened when a game encouraged players to slow down. “Lack of stimulation is not lack of experience. Lack of stimulation allows different kinds of reflective emotional experiences for the player to evolve and to grow out of it. We have to provide space and time for different types of emotions to flourish. All the devices in [Dear Esther] are encouraging the player to slow down and to focus intensely. You get this incredible building kind of emotional journey. If the player’s got stuff to think and feel about, they’ll use that time to think and feel about it. And they will come outside of that experience in a stronger position in terms of that design contract with you. They’re invested heavily in the game. You can’t feel certain things when you’re being rushed. Overstimulation kills atmosphere.”
“If they’re feeling, it’s fine,” said Pinchbeck. “If they’re engaged emotionally, they don’t have to be engaged intellectually. We know this from so many games which aren’t of this type, from things like Audiosurf and all those rhythm games. There’s absolutely no difference applying that principle to a story-driven game. People just want to feel in a space. People are hungry to feel in a space and soak up that atmosphere.”

Download Free PC Game Victoria II A House Divided

Victoria II A House Divided

Download Free PC Game Victoria II A House Divided
A House Divided is an expansion for Victoria II created in-house at Paradox Entertainment, with the stated aim of putting the American Civil War at the core of the player experience while also improving pretty much all the aspects of the core release.

“The South shall rise again” is the rallying cry south of the Mason –Dixon line, the divider between the Northern and Southern states, and gamers who love their historical conflicts and their alternate realities can look to the new 1861 scenario, which allows for full control of the CSA and its independence struggle.
The Confederates start in a pretty bad position, with the North enjoying superiority in numbers and industrial capacity. Two great generals that can lead armies are the biggest asset for the South and their proper use is crucial.
After playing a few games up until the 1870s, it seems that the best way to survive is to get the King Cotton decision to fire or to create a killer stack in order to ravage the Eastern front and take Washington D.C. before the Union occupies Richmond.
The official forums tend to have more strategies for those who need them, but trying and failing this challenge a few times is an excellent way to reacquaint yourself with the Victoria II mechanics and the new additions of A House Divided.

Big rivals

Review image
Fans of the European theater of XIX history should not feel abandoned as the designers at Paradox Interactive have made sure to add a number of overall improvements and new mechanics to A House Divide, with effects that are clearly visible when using the old 1836 starting date.
Investment in other countries is the major addition when it comes to both economy and diplomacy. It makes it more interesting to create a sphere of influence and maintain it, and it gives big powers one extra way of making money.
It also enhances the Great Games that tend to develop in Victoria II, with two Great Powers often focusing on the same country and trying to use everything, from economy to armies and diplomacy moves to bring them into their sphere.
Victoria II also enhances the revolution mechanics and how it can affect a country a region. All movements that aim to get a social issue adopted will now have a clearer effect on the political make-up of the upper house and will try to get their own reform passed, even if this means turning to violence.
Radicalization, which is influenced by government reforms and by overall political structure, means that those popular movements enjoying high support can become active rebels, taking up arms and trying to overthrow the government.
There are also modifications to how war works. Violent conflict was never at the center of the Victoria II experience and some complained that it takes too long to get a reason to crush rivals. Now players can manufacture Cassus Belli against other states, at an infamy cost that is randomly awarded, which makes starting wars easier than ever for warmongers.
The same mechanics can push countries closer to the Bad Boy limit, where all other Great Powers attack because they are upsetting the world balance. In my experience, the new system makes it too easy to declare war and the Artificial Intelligence tends to abuse the possibilities of the system.

Another series of solid changes to the game are linked to the User Interface. Gamers, especially those who like to get immersed in the alternate history they are creating, can select which countries are interesting to them and get more information about how they perform.
There are also tweaks to how notifications, both important and minor, are delivered to the player. Both changes make it easier to see how the entire world is evolving rather than just focusing on the player nation and the other Great Powers.
As always when it comes to their expansions, the developers at Paradox Interactive have listened to the feedback coming from the community of players, which is smaller than for other games they develop but just as vocal, and have included options to get more information on POPs and on political trends at a glance.
I played quite a few campaigns already, most of them as the Confederates and the Prussians, and found that some problems remain. One-hand wars, especially those including at least two Great Powers, tend to devolve into ping-pong battles, where the actor with the biggest stack tends to win in the long run.
On the other hand, the world has a penchant for evolving towards an economic model where bankruptcies come often and have a big impact on the more advanced countries, especially after 1900.
Despite this I very much enjoy what Victoria II can offer and spend quite a bit of my free time thinking about possible strategies and tactical moves that can push my chosen country closer to world domination.
The expansion adds nothing specific for the multiplayer experience, but it seems that quite a few players are now coming back to the game, meaning that it is a perfect time to jump back in, especially for those who lack a regular gaming group.
Paradox Interactive is known for the long-term support it offers for its main franchises, with both Europa Universalis III and Hearts of Iron III getting at least two serious expansion each, which means that another expansion package for Victoria II is pretty much a given at this point.
All those who have long-term plans to play Victoria II and the mods associated with it need to update to A House Divided as soon as possible. The expansion manages to make the core game better while also offering a number of potential avenues for future development.
