Constructor: Patrick Merrell

Relative difficulty: Medium

THEME: "Of Course!" — common expressions with golf-related clues

Word of the Day: UNK. (91D: Anonymous: Abbr.) —
Anthony Platt (born March 28, 1982) commonly known as Unk, is a DJ/rapper. He began spinning records in 1998. After meeting DJ Jelly and DJ Montay, he joined their DJ entourage, the Southern Style DJs. They performed for high school parties, proms, pep rallies, and other events around the state of Georgia. In 2000 Big Oomp signed Unk to his label, Big Oomp Records. Some of his recent work has been featured on the 2K Sports NBA 2K9 game. He is known for his smash-hit Walk It Out. (wikipedia)

Golf. Not my thing. Terms are familiar enough, and the grid (ugsome UNK, aside) seems solid. It's just that cute little golf puns aren't that cute to me. Probably a very satisfying puzzle for golf-lovers or people who like this kind of innocuous wordplay. I'm not this puzzle's ideal audience.

Theme answers:
  • 22A: Golf club repositioning? (CHANGE OF ADDRESS)
  • 14D: Duffer's shots? (FOREPLAY)
  • 40A: Hole in one? (STROKE OF LUCK)
  • 49A: Comment after hitting a tee shot out of bounds? (BYE BYE, BIRDIE)
  • 69A: Wedge shot from a worn-out practice range? (A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK)
  • 90A: Use one club for all 18 holes? (PUTTER AROUND)
  • 101A: Course not listed in guidebooks? (MISSING LINKS)
  • 88D: Club thrown in disgust? (CAST IRON)
  • 122A: Woods stowed in the rear of a golf cart? (BACK-SEAT DRIVERS)

Bottom of the grid was way, way harder than the top for me. This is largely the fault of RIENZI (93D: Early Wagner opera), which may as well have been any random series of six letters. Never heard of it. Never ever. Rough. But there was other roughness in the bottom half of the grid: ALL CASH had a kind of arbitrary clue on it (97D: Like a real-estate deal that doesn't involve a mortgage)—I was expecting something much more real-estate-specific. Robert Frost's middle name? &$^% if I know (LEE). Miami University's mascot is an IBIS? (112D: University of Miami mascot) They're the Hurricane, right? The Miami Hurricane? What the bleep? That's not Miami University OF OHIO is it? Nope (trivia: their mascot is "Swoop the Redhawk"). Even DSCS / ERIC gave me grief. No idea that ERIC was any Danish king's name, let alone the name of a whole lot of 'em (128A: Any of seven Danish kings). And DSCS could be DSOS ... thankfully I realized that ERIO was not a likely Danish name. Top half was largely a cinch, except for AMF (7D: Inits. in bowling lanes). Again, I ask, What the !@#? Stands for "American Machine and Foundry," and according to Wikipedia, "American Machine and Foundry or AMF was founded in 1900 and was once one of the largest recreational equipment companies in the United States." Trying to figure out why this wasn't ALF (a much more reasonable, and cluable, answer). At first I thought it was because the resulting cross, HOLE, was somewhere else in the grid, in a golf answer. But no. Oh, wait—HOLE is in the clue for STROKE OF LUCK. Maybe that's it. Anyway, the point is, ALF / HOLE beats, nay, destroys AMF / HOME.

Bullets:
  • 26A: Botanical holder (TENDRIL) — that's a pretty difficult clue. Took many crosses to uncover the answer.
  • 37A: Jennifer of tennis (CAPRIATI) — you have to be a tennis fan *and* (probably) of a certain age (certainly over 30) for this to be easy (as it was for me).
  • 53A: Insect named for the Virgin Mary (LADYBUG) — I had no idea. Cool trivia. I filled this answer in without ever looking at the clue. Same thing with BYE BYE BIRDIE, come to think of it.
  • 77A: Disappearance of 7/2/1937 (EARHART) — I was just reading a Nat'l Geographic cover story on The Titanic. Speaking of disappearances, I mean.
  • 99A: Old-time actress Talbot or Naldi (NITA) — I forgot about Talbot. Naldi is a gimme.
  • 4D: Terrestrial decapod (LAND CRAB) — didn't know that was a species. Sounds as real as "land shark."
  • 35D: Sport named for a British boarding school (RUGBY) — more cool trivia. News to me.
  • 54D: Cassim's brother in a classic tale (ALI BABA) — clue was meaningless to me, but with a few crosses, ALI BABA came into view. I was thinking "man, this dude better be famous..." And lo ...

PC Game Jungle Kartz 2012

Jungle Kartz by Nordic games for Nintendo Wii is an all-new go-karting game that features eight fun loving animals racing through various jungle tracks, as you may have guessed.
The player controls their Kart by either using the Wiimote and Nunchuk combination, or by simply inserting the Wiimote into a steering wheel peripheral (the game is available packaged with a steering wheel if you don’t already have one) for a more realistic driving experience.
The main objective of the game is to become king of the Jungle by racing across 32 tracks in different tournaments. There are eight adorable characters to choose from; Sal, Rocky, Bob, Dixie, Ashley, Gus, Sass and Zero. Each of these animal characters has their own particular abilities to increase their chances of becoming number one and winning the race. The game offers eight vehicles to play around with, from the heavier ones which are harder to control, to the lighter ones which speed around the track a lot quicker, but don’t like taking a knock. Different Karts can be unlocked throughout the game, encouraging the player to try something new and keep playing.
Image10
The game covers 32 tracks in eight different environments, from the icy cold depths of Arctic point to the deep excessive forests. The environments within the game were certainly varied, but seemed a little washed out and lacking in detail, leaving them a little bit dull and uninspiring. Even though it is not really fair to make comparisons between Mario Kart and Jungle Kartz, it’s hard to stray from the fact that we’ve been spoilt with the cool, crisp design of Mario Kart and it’s very rich and vibrant colors.
As has become standard in Kart racers, a number of pickups items are available along the tracks to give players an edge in their race, such as Pineapple explosive projectiles that you fire at competitors in front of you, or Spider Webs that are dropped behind to slow down the other racers. These items are all fairly run of the mill, but add an extra edge to the racing.
I tried out both of the control options to see which one felt better and, after a very short time, decided that the Wiimote and Nunchuk option was better for me, as with the steering wheel I had real trouble making sharp turns and found myself hitting walls and completely flipping my Kart upside down. The Wiimote and Nunchuk control seemed much easier, using the stick to steer, the A button to accelerate and the Z button to use special items against opponents.

Image11
There are three different modes to choose from within the game – Quick Race, Time Trial and Tournament. Unfortunately, Jungle Kartz didn’t really compel me to play the tracks and there’s no real incentive to keep picking the game up, even in multiplayer mode, where four of you can team up together in split-screen.
Graphically, the game looked poor and lacked any real design on the tracks and in the background. Driving around the tracks could have been great with a little improvement to the level of detail, but it all seemed like a last minute attempt at a Mario Kart clone. The handling wasn’t too bad, as long as the Wiimote/Nunchuk control method was used, but it was frustrating when, hit by other vehicles or knocking into a wall, my Kart would take ages getting back into the race, especially when it resulted in my Kart being left upside down. But even then, it doesn’t take too long to get back to the front of the pack, as the difficulty is set quite low.
Image12
Jungle Kartz is a bargain priced game that offers a lower priced Karting game that may entertain youngsters for a short while. However, I think anyone would be hard-pressed to choose this game over Mario Kart unless price is the only issue. The entire game looks very dated and rushed, and will only really appeal to anyone who has never played Mario Kart and the other, more polished, clones

PC Game Stacking [Eng] 2012

Last year, the delightful world of Stacking opened its miniature gates to players on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Now, the lively Russian nesting dolls who populate this handcrafted adventure have migrated to the PC, and these delicate dolls have suffered nary a crack in the transition. Stacking invites you to visit a place that’s bursting with charming characters, endearing visual details, and satisfying puzzles to solve. It’s a game that appeals to the child in each of us, the part of us that finds joy in the simple act of play.
Charlie Blackmore is the youngest member of the Blackmore family, and the smallest doll in the entire world of Stacking. An evil industrialist called the Baron exploits the less fortunate for his own gain, and when the working-class Blackmore clan falls into debt, all the children are rounded up by the Baron’s lackeys and forced into labor. All except little Charlie, that is, who soon sets off to free his siblings from their oppressive circumstances. It’s a sad situation, and Stacking doesn’t shy away from tugging at your heartstrings a bit or from confronting the grim issue of child labor. But the game doesn’t bludgeon you over the head with its weighty themes; these concerns are a melancholy undercurrent running beneath the whimsical surface.
To rescue his siblings, the plucky Charlie must resolve labor disputes, get cruise ships to return to port, and more. The world in which these adventures take place is a charming realm that looks as if it were carefully cobbled together from household items and the old toys and knickknacks that you might find gathering dust in a musty old attic. Look closely and you’ll see that the suitcases are actually matchboxes and the smokestacks on that steamship are actually cigars.
The dolls who populate this world look like hand-painted treasures, with such small details in their faces and their clothing that you’ll want to take a moment to admire each new doll you encounter and appreciate the artist’s work. The dolls are inflexible–they have no arms to swing or legs to step with–but they nonetheless move with a great deal of expressiveness. They hop along jauntily in a style that resembles stop-motion animation, shuffle impatiently while waiting in lines, and pop their tops momentarily when alarmed. The camera nestles in a bit too close at times, and there are some areas in which the upper part of a doll passes right through a low overhang, shattering the illusion that this is an elaborate living diorama. But these are minor blemishes in a game whose visuals are usually enchanting.

Levi the friendly hobo chronicles your adventures.

You’ll want to spend some time just soaking in Stacking’s elegant atmosphere, but the real fun begins when you start to play with the world. Charlie Blackmore’s diminutive size is his greatest asset; as the smallest of all dolls, he can nest inside and take control of any doll that’s one size larger than he is. That doll can similarly stack into a doll that’s one size larger, and so on. The game calls this process stacking, and it’s both fun and useful, because each doll that you stack into has an ability.
Many of these abilities are handy in solving the numerous puzzles you encounter on your quest to free your siblings. If you need to create chaos at a safari, for instance, taking control of a Kodiak bear and using its “growl” ability on the guests should certainly cause a panic. Each puzzle has a number of solutions, and while you need to find only one solution to a puzzle to continue the story, solving a puzzle in multiple ways enhances the decor in your secret hideout, where the friendly hobo Levi paints the walls to chronicle your travels.

1781 Mozart premiere / SAT 3-31-12 / Knighted diamond magnate Oppenheimer / Hugo-winning 1994 memoir / Cityhopper carrier / Demographic lauded in 1965 song / Beano alternative / Temple of Vesta locale

Constructor: Scott Atkinson

Relative difficulty: Easy-Medium

THEME: none

Word of the Day: "IDOMENEO" (2D: 1781 Mozart premiere) —
Idomeneo, re di Creta ossia Ilia e Idamante (Italian for Idomeneo,[1] King of Crete, or, Ilia and Idamante; usually referred to simply as Idomeneo, K. 366) is an Italian language opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The libretto was adapted by Giambattista Varesco from a French text by Antoine Danchet, which had been set to music by André Campra as Idoménée in 1712. Mozart and Varesco were commissioned in 1780 by Karl Theodor, Elector of Bavaria for a court carnival. He probably chose the subject, though it might have been Mozart. (wikipedia)

Best themeless I've done in a long time. Telling (I think) that it's a 72-worder (the maximum). Crisp and entertaining, with almost no pips or seeds or stones or anything to make you gag or crack a crown. Interlocking 15s are beautiful. Longer answers in the corners do their jobs, solidly, handsomely. Words are words, names are names. And all the mediocre fill is short and somewhat obscured among the array of black squares toward the center of the grid. My favorite part is probably the symmetrical musical face-off right in the middle of the grid: MONKEES vs. THE CARS! (Victory goes to THE CARS by TKO, in case you're wondering). My second favorite part of the grid was "I, ASIMOV," mainly because I guessed (and I mean Guessed) it off just the "I" in TIME (20A: It's often shown with hands). Woo hoo! Worst parts (for me, personally, as a solver) were "IDOMENEO" (not a title I know; really want it to be "I, DOMENEO") and ERNEST Oppenheimer (not up on my diamond magnates, I guess) (13D: Knighted diamond magnate Oppenheimer). But those are probably names I should know, esp. "IDOMENEO"; thus the problem is with my brain, not the puzzle. Best clue: 43A: It's often in the spotlight (XENON).

Bullets:
  • 16A: Singer with a black V-shaped collar (MEADOWLARK) — First thought, for reasons I don't understand at all: BOBBY VALLI (who, it turns out, is the brother of Frankie)
  • 17A: Food product for the eco-conscious (DOLPHIN-SAFE TUNA) — I want to call this clue "killer," but that seems inappropriate. Fantastic, contemporary, in-the-language phrase. THAT is what you should build themeless grids around.
  • 19A: "That man" in "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" (EMILE) — didn't know this, but still got it easily from crosses. My main question: a. is that really how you spell "OUTA"? and b. why have I not seen that in puzzles? (not that I want to)
  • 33A: Seize, old-style (REAVE) — usually not that excited by "old-style" answers, but I like this one because it intersects another "old-style" answer, reminding us of that old adage: "Never let 'em REAVE your SNEE" (23D: Old dagger).
  • 53A: Ray with lines (LIOTTA) — saw right through this, got it off the "L." This "...with lines"-type clue is almost always an actor.
  • 60A: Features of some Amerindian embroidery (PORCUPINE QUILLS) — got this off the "QUILLS," which, when I put it that way, is not that impressive-sounding an accomplishment. Beautiful answer.
  • 66A: Brand name used by Jersey Standard (ESSO) — off the "E," confirmed only by the fact that the next two crosses were plurals.
  • 46A: Language that gave us "catamaran" (TAMIL) — first thought: FARSI.
  • 3D: Demographic lauded in a 1965 song ("CALIFORNIA GIRLS") — another wonderful, genuinely funny clue. "Demographic" = aptly inapt.

  • 8D: Wheels from the Netherlands (EDAMS) — "What are some Dutch cars?" he wondered, stupidly.
  • 29D: Beano alternative (GAS-X) — that's a nice little four-letter answer. Surprised I don't see it more often.
  • 37D: Cityhopper carrier (KLM) — dang, the Dutch are all over this thing, what with their cheeses and their planes and their porcupines and ...
  • 46D: Temple of Vesta locale (TIVOLI) — another one I didn't know. Good thing about all the stuff I didn't know was that it was surrounded by stuff I did. Crosswords!

The Sims 3 Showtime Full Version 2012
The latest Sims 3 add-on, like the others, has been carefully crafted to find new ways to micromanage your time and befuddle your senses. The basic virtual dollhouse formula is unchanged but Showtime adds a new hood, new bling and a supposedly new incentive to play – namely, discovering your inner diva.
As always, you start by creating characters, finding accommodation and decking out them out with old and new items – of which there are more than250. Starlight Shore is a smallish new town, but comes complete with a bohemian beachfront area and plenty of inspirational housing to move into once you start making money. You’ll also notice a bevy of performance venues, from small clubs and bars where you perform for tips to arenas that you can pack with paying customers once your skills improve.
Sims vets will quickly plough into the minutiae of making friends, money and opportunities. However, what will strike you from the outset is Showtime’s big new idea – Social Networking.
Social Networking can be found in the top right of the screen as a pop-up window where players post memories, achievements, messages or friend requests. You can control who sends these messages to a certain extent, creating a constant visual chatter that you can tune into or out of at will. Old timers might find this distracting or even annoying, but I’m guessing the Sims’ younger audience will love it.
Perhaps less successful is the SimPort. This is basically an extension of the game’s IM feature, allowing you to pack your character off to another player’s game for an impromptu gig.
They return with shared experiences and memories but little else – drawing attention to the fact that what this feature really lacks is a picture-in-picture display of your Sim being cheered or heckled by your so-called friends. This was probably too technically demanding for a mere add-on, but without it SimPort feels like a good idea waiting to be better implemented.
So what of these new careers? Well, for the first time, Sim jobs are more than just a featureless means to making money – these are proper interactive pursuits that you are supposed to invest time in improving. You can choose between Singer, Acrobat, Magician and DJ – although the latter is a moonlighting career that any profession can try. I’m guessing most players will try the Singer first, armed with only a couple of cheesy tracks and a poor sing-o-gram business. As your reputation grows (and this applies to all three new careers) you can start requesting auditions for bigger gigs or showing up at SimFests; public talent contests with cash prizes.
Each of the eight career levels adds more tracks, tricks and props to your repertoire. There are also new Wishes, Skills and three new character Traits too; natural born performer, social butterfly and diva.

Fans of quirky characters, after the previous appearance of Vampires, can also look forward to a Genie granting them three wishes (including the ability to return from the dead) once the dusty lamp has been purchased from the Lifetime Rewards catalogue.
The Sims 3 Showtime
So yes, Showtime has more of everything you’d expect but what it’s really crying out for are some diva performances. I know it’s a Sims game, so recycled moves and gobbledygook lyrics are perhaps to be expected, but surely they could have splashed out on better backing tracks?
Even the Katy Perry limited edition, which you’d expect to be jam-packed with hits, only has a few fashion items and a poster. As for the DJ, there are some decent genres to mix (including Dubstep) but nothing you’ll be tempted to crank up the volume for. Things do improve a bit if you choose to be an Acrobat or Magician, who at least can draw on better props as they move to bigger venues. It’s not exactly Cirque du Soleil, but it’s a lot better than sitting through endless karaoke gibberish from the singers.
For dedicated fans of the series, Showtime is a worthy add-on, chock full of new diversions and clearly on a mission to take its audience out of the bedroom and into the wider world. In fact, between social networking and SimPort, if you were looking for a clue as to the future direction of the franchise, look no further. However, if it was hoping to keep reality TV fans tuned in, what it really needed was some Guitar Hero swagger.
